DRAM and flash have defined memory and storage for a generation, but a wave of alternatives is maturing. Technologies that blur the line between fast volatile memory and durable storage promise systems that remember instantly and lose nothing on power failure.
Adoption is gradual, because the entire software stack assumes today’s split between memory and disk. Rewriting those assumptions is slow work with large payoffs.
The memory hierarchy is being redrawn, and the systems that exploit it first will pull ahead.
